How to Plan Your Child’s Birthday Party

Your little one’s birthday is coming soon, and you want to make it a special event for them. I’ve had my share of birthday parties growing up and I’ve watched my parents throw elaborate birthday parties for my sister and me.  Children’s birthdays are a fun way to create memories and celebrate your child’s special day.

Here are some ways to throw a great children’s birthday party.

Pick a date and theme for your child’s birthday. Most parents like to do it on the exact day of the birthdate but if your child’s birthday falls on a weekday, then opt for the weekend.

With the date chosen, create your guest list and if your kid is of school age, ask them who they would like to invite; after all it is their party.

If you are planning your child’s birthday on a grand scale, then mailed invitations would be nice but if you are having a simple get together then phone calls or even Evites will suffice.

You do want to invite people at least a month in advance.

Once you have gone through The Art of Party Planning, it’s time for entertainment.  Because it’s a kid’s party, arrange games for the children to play.  You want to pick games that everyone can play together, such as musical chairs, pin the tail on the donkey, pass the parcel, and other children’s games.

Schedule the games before cake cutting so it gives kids plenty of time to play.  Have a few prizes to give out (this is optional); set a budget as to how much you want to spend on prizes.  Along with prizes for the games, hand out party favors to your guests as a way to thank them for attending.  You can either arrange them on the tables or hand them out at the end of the party.

Other forms of entertainment you can have for the children is to have face painting, have an arts and crafts corner, make cupcakes and cookies and let them decorate it their own way or have a petting zoo or even hire characters from your kid’s favorite movie or show.

When it comes to the menu, you want to keep it kid friendly, but avoid food that can get too messy. If you decide to get a custom cake then place the order at least 1-2 weeks in advance. For store bought cakes, be sure to pick it up the day before.

Remember you are going to have a bunch of kids running around and it’s your child’s day to just have fun and not worry about ruining the furniture. Be aware if any of the guests, minor and adult, have any dietary restrictions.

Best practice is to ask when confirming the guest list. Set the table before the party starts.   If the party is taking place during summer, then take out the Cake and desserts after meal has been served, no one wants to eat melted desserts.

If you’re planning the party at home, then arrange it to have it in the backyard, giving the kid’s plenty of space to run around. If you can’t have it outside and must have it indoor, then create some open space.

Decorate the place the night before the party. Whether you’re having the party at home or at a venue, create a fun atmosphere.  Even putting up some balloons and streamers will make the location look fun and inviting. The last thing to do, which is an essential to any party, is to have fun!

It’s your kid’s birthday and they’re having a fun time with their friends and you have gotten them their favorite superhero cake!

What is the craziest thing that happened at your kid’s birthday party? What is a fun tradition that takes place?

For those of you who are planning your child’s birthday for the first time, what are some ways I can help?

I hope this blog helps you plan a fun-tastic birthday for your kid(s)!

Until next time!
